  • All entries should be submitted as Full Page PDF tearsheets. The page folio should be visible on the PDF. This is NEW this year.
  • If your Multi-photo entry runs across more than one page, please create a multi-page PDF before uploading your entry
  • Feel free to any additional information you feel provides context to the photo.
  • DO NOT ENTER THE SAME PHOTO IN MORE THAN ONE CATEGORY

Wildlife Photo

A picture that captures wildlife in still or action, to be judged on composition, originality, exposure, cropping. The subject ‘wildlife’ includes mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, insects, and aquatic animals, but images of domestic animals should not be considered for this category.

Human Interest

A picture of a ‘found’ situation that has a strong human or people element and/or a fresh view of an everyday scene. A sports or a feature photo may also be considered for this category if it shows strong human interest/emotion ie. a sports-related picture other than game action

Multi-Photo Layout

A series of photographs that tell a visual story or are centered around a single theme. Subject matter can be News, Feature or Sports. There is no limit to the number of images per Picture Story entry, but entrants are reminded sometimes less is more. Single pictures that are a part of a Picture Story cannot be entered in a second category.

Note: If the Picture Story was shot over a period of more than one calendar year, it should be entered in the year it is completed.

Sports Action

A picture that captures the competitive peak action during a sporting event.

Spot News

A picture of an unscheduled news event for which no advance planning was possible. It might also consist of a picture with serious content and strong human interest of a scheduled or organized news event; i.e. mourners at a funeral, protesters, press conferences or staged coverage opportunities, but ‘found’ situations will be favoured more.

Feature Photo

A picture with compelling and pleasing aesthetic qualities in regards to composition and graphic elements. This category often feels like it overlaps with Human Interest Photo. The difference being: Human Interest photo would show strong human interest/emotion and a Feature photo should show strong composition/artistry. That doesn’t mean it won’t have people in it, but that the style/craftsmanship are the qualities being judged first and foremost.
